IM Governance is the application of formal approved rules to the management and control of IM Assets, such as data, data models, data definitions, reports, toolsets, data sources, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), IM and governance documents.
IM Governance rules are defined in one or more of the following ways:
- Policy/Principles – a general statement of intent and scope
- Process – a defined series of steps or actions to achieve an objective
- Procedure – a detailed definition of a process
- Standard – a defined statement of an agreed level of requirement
- Methods – an approach to be taken when carrying out a task
- Definitions – detailed descriptions of IM components

Clearly this IM governance must be applied to all IM Assets. However, what is the organisational model which will allow it to be effectively applied? Acuma has developed a pragmatic approach to this through identification of IM Asset Owners and Stewards. IM Asset owners and stewards are required because
- Investment in IM Assets needs to be justified and prioritised based on business value and usage
- To maximise business value IM Assets needs to be effectively managed and IM Governance consistently applied
- To ensure the IM Asset is being managed effectively all interested groups need to be identified – Owners
- To effectively manage IM Assets someone needs to be responsible – a Steward
The application of IM Governance and asset ownership and stewardship is particularly important when applied to data and metadata assets – these are the essential elements in the provision of sustainable business information.
